susquehanna

i take on the walk
of an old man
arms out at my sides
trying to hoard momentum for a jump that doesn’t come

i haven’t made a habit of wearing my self with ease
my flesh hangs
loose like a too large coat
stones in my pockets

what if
the cold river water
had washed my lungs clean
back when I was
that brilliant dumb girl
age eighteen?
